Default Building the "Crystal Palace" Amp

Greetings -
Long time lurker, -0- poster.
I thumbed through a copy of building Valve Amplifiers and I saw the pic of the amp in the wheelbarrow, and for whatever that has stuck with me. For a long time I have been enamored with the silky sound of a quality (my opinion anyway) amp. But yea - never undertaken such a build...

So - Has anyone here built this amp? Are there any plans out there?

Have you tried sourcing the output tubes? Pretty hard/scarce/expensive. I'd likely try to adapt it to some other output tubes, such as parallel KT88s like he mentions, or maybe some TV toobs. I think the russian version of the driver tubes is harder to acquire now as well. I might be inclined to use 6SN7s, or one half of each 6SN7 (alternate sides so you can swap sides when one side weakens).

His current opinion is that paralleled EL34 would be a better choice for output tubes. Likewise, one can do better these days on the CCS.

Why would they name an amp after a building which famously got destroyed by fire? ;-)

Why would he name his current amplifier after a famously hack writer?

I haven't spent any time sourcing the components. Feedback on this adventure doesn't seem very positive.

If you follow his advice and use paralleled EL34, it's a remarkably good amp. It does NOT sound "tubey" or colored.
