What is the proper name for those infamous ceramic packages that contained several discrete components inside of them? I have heard them called couplates, monolithic film, etc.

In consumer grade amplifiers, they often contained the equalization for RIAA phono and NAB tape head stages. For tone controls, they often contained all the circuitry except the pot.

The bigger question is were they proprietary parts or were they made universally or both? Replacing them with regular parts is no big deal, as long as the schematic shows what is inside of them.
