Wondering if anyone has much experience with Auricaps? I have been testing them for some time and would like to get others experiences with them. Maybe ask a question or two as speaker crossover caps.
Thanks. |

Quite good - strong bass for their size.
Sound muddy until they have a decent DC bias across them. This is fine for the majority of tube circuits, of course. Cheers, Hugh |

This reminds me that JBL uses batteries to bias the caps in their crossovers. Is this simple to do? If so, how? Would this make Auricaps better speaker caps?
Thanks, Mark |

Hi,

It looks as if they carry the same PTFE insulated leadout wires as well. Quote:
Any filmcap I know sounds better when biased, I suppose it would help the Auricaps too as Hugh points out. Cheers,

Yep, that is what I noticed when I put them in the crossover, a slightly fuzzy sound.
Also noticed one other difference. Handclapping wasn't as good as the Solens (although the openness is much better than the solens). The harmonic structure seemed off. I am guessing that handclapping may have a very broad harmonic spectrum, plus/or the lack of bias?? Other than that, they sounded wonderful. Thanks guys. |

I've found Auricaps to sound very good indeed in
valve equipment, but note that they do seem to take a long time to run in. But for speaker crossovers, I recall seeing about Auricaps vs Ansars, where the Ansars were preferred. These are not expensive, and may be had from Wilmslow Audio or Cricklewood Electronics, both in the UK and on the web. |

Will check to see if there are dealers in the US.
Been running the auricaps all day, every day and tweeking the crossover slightly seems to be helping. The 1270s are really sounding great. I may be to picky as I want absolute perfection. Another thing. Depending on which order I play the selections, the sound is different. If I play a bass heavy song and the next selection is a female solo, the voice sounds lighter than if I play the female solo first. Anyone else run into that problem? |
