why not a 6LU8 pp amp instead, at a dollar each, U$4 buys you a quad of output power tube, i made 2 amps based on this and i can definitely say that it is worth it...

That 50-watter is only a 35-watter in RC-19 (1959). 7199 input and PS, 6AU6 drivers, 7027 output. On a closer look the driver is a bit different from the 10-watter.

Tony, I have a couple GE 6LU8A, I thought they were oscillator amplifier. They're also compactron (tiny)

Yes, that was the design I referred to in post 14, a very clever circuit. I think it used 6CB6 drivers (RC-21).

Another tube I've been reading a little about is the 6AS7GA. Any thoughts on those and which tubes would work well as drivers for them.

Buried on this site is a 6as7 SRPP amp I built long ago. It is a good tube, BIG sound. Needs lost of voltage drive since its mu is so low.

thanks everyone for your suggestions. Vinylkid, I think that scem is the one i'm gonna use. I wanted one using the 6SN7. Thanks, I'll post how it's coming along.
