It a mercury vapor rectifier tube, but I don't know what type. Don't break it open. They're pretty efficient, but most of the transmitters, dielectric heaters, maybe x-ray machines etc that used them had them replaced with silicon very long ago because the mercury tubes needed a 15 minute warm up if the mercury vapor condensed. So it's basically a display item, more dangerous than most due to the toxic material. Being so long, it is higher voltage than most types which is why I added x-ray machine to the list.
 
What you have is a very high voltage, high vacuum rectifier type 5576. There is no mercury in it.
