Should I try adding a small Tube Preamp to a DTA-100?

Hi all,

I am just getting into DIY Audio. I’ve built some Overnight Sensation MTMs that I am running off of a DTA-100. I've also always like the sound of Tube Amps when I have auditioned them at hi end stores. Having seen hybrid systems like Peachtree, I am wondering if adding a tube preamp would make any difference (for the $100) giving me sort of a poor man’s tube effect. (I’m hoping for that lush airy sound).

I realize that there may be no way to short cut and if I want that sound I need to start thinking from the ground up.

Another though I've had is to maybe just invest in a better more powerful solid state amp. I have been looking at the Emotiva mini X a-100.

Any recommendation, alternatives much appreciated.

If you want "tube effects" your best bet is to buy a poorly designed tube buffer. This will add a little noise and distortion, which some people seem to like.

The alternative is to buy/make a decent valve amp, and just listen to the music.
