Hi,

Considering that the BB's go for nearly twice what the orange globes go for, doesn't it make more sense to keep buying the Orange Globes?
What differences are there in terms of materials, production techniques, sound quality that might account for the premium price of the BB's.

How good is Brimar 12AX7 CV4004 or 12ax7?
How does this compare to the amperex? (orange globes)

cheers

I have Amperex 12AX7s with orange globes on them which clearly come from different factories. And tubes with other brands printed on them which clearly come from the same factories as some of the Amperex.

The ink on the tube doesn't really have much effect on the performance. This is stamp collecting, not electronics. Don't expect rational explanations.

Both Mullard and Brimar made different versions of ECC83/12AX7/CV4004. In some circuits they may sound slightly different. In many circuits they will sound the same. Bear in mind that sample variation within one design version may exceed differences between versions. After all, these were all ECC83!

In addition, as SY says, you can buy genuine Mullards which were not made in a Mullard UK factory or not even in a Philips group factory (same for Brimar). They are genuine in the sense that Mullard printed (or had printed for them) their name on the glass. You can also buy valves made in a Mullard factory, but with other markings on the outside of the valve.

Ignore the ink on the outside. Learn about Philips group factory etch codes, as these are more informative (although they can be faked for popular/expensive valves).
