Hi Folks .....
This is my first amp - The NP-100v12 - 12AU7 / IRF510 HeadAmp. it was truly a labor of love .... as it was my first build of anything .... it sounds absolutely amaizing ... I can't belleive it.... really opens up the detail of my sennhiesers better than anything else has ..... I just need to sort out a power supply .... the sla battery i built the second box for, as a sort of battery pack, is great but only gets about 2 hours. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also in the build is a 555 chip circuit that skips the loud ON "CLICK" by holding the output connections for about 10 seconds... I'm 37, and my Dad's and electrical engineer... as was his dad .... I am not (LOL ) ..... so I guess there is some birthright going on here ...... also I couldn't have Ironed out my mistakes during the build without some coaching ..... but honestly ... it's about time i get into this game On to bigger and better...any suggestions Tim |

Glad to see you stepped out and actually built something. Did you design your amp or did you use an existing design? There is a vast storehouse of knowledge to be gained here at diy if you will do some searches, you may get inspired to go further....maybe a good place to start would be to examine different power supply circuits and finish off your headphone amp that way.
All the best, Terry

Cool project!
I'd like to examine your pics, but can't seem to zoom them... Concerning the power supply; do you lean towards AC or DC heater, regulated or passive design... Last edited by funk1980; 10th December 2011 at 06:01 PM. |

Yeah, please post your pictures here on the forum where we can see them.
Just go to "advanced" and then "manage attachments" and you can upload reasonable sized photos. I recommend 800x600 format for most uses.

I also did a hybrid tube mosfet headphone amp. It uses triple triode compactron tubes for the first and second stage driving a class A mosfet follower. It was designed to be top stacked by the compactron power amp also utilizing the same tubes driving the outputs..
The power supply has a dual slow start 12volt regulated DC supplies for the output section and also for the heaters for the tubes. A couple of temps of using AC failed to reduce the low level hum from the AC. The stainless reflector also acts as a RF shield to help keep the tube section quiet.

Once the addiction sets in (first succesfull project finished) it won't be much longer untill you'll be doing DC supplies for all kinds of obscure DHT's nobody has ever heard of ('cause they're cheap!) or looking for A2 transmitter triodes in the auctions for 1kV plate voltage projects, or perhaps some OTL madness to heat the house.
Just wait and see. |

I hope that you will try different applications for tubes, there are so many tubes out there and circuits just waiting to be built. I do better with PCB based tube circuits, I am not skilled in point to point wiring that so many are. It is an art and a science blended by skill that we all can develope with time, enjoy!
