Quad II Switch Mode PSU
 

Hi, Another Quad II with a mains transformer shorted HT. I have previously tried rewinding, but without much success (i got bored counting the turns and getting the tar off). So as I was just repairing a a modern 300 watt Wharfedale with a SMPs when it occured to me that it shouldnt be too difficult to build a 360vdc and 6.3v(dc) smp inside the existing Quad transformer can. So I have reserched the forums and cannot find anything directly relating to this, I realise that there are a lot of problems with the noise from the smp and the ht coming on too soon which would need resolving.


So has anyone done this?

It sounds perfectly feasible. You could overcome the instant HT problem by leaving the existing GZ32 in place and feeding the SMPS supply to both anodes. You would then need to supply 5 volts as well.
