Look the idea is there roughly 3 classes in descending order of dissipation

(kt88 - 6550)
(EL34 - KT77)
(6L6 - 6p3se)

You should keep it in the class it was designed for. My advice is , if you are sure it ws meant for EL34's, and you need something within budget, go for JJ KT77's. Their quality control issues were solved a long itme ago, now they are fine, I have some myself. They sound very good to me.

found some info on bias and schematics. For starteres make sure your amp uses 10Ω resisters on the cathodes to measue bias. You should be able to measure the resistance at the bias port to ground with amp off. Bias your KT88s accordingly then give another listen.

I would contact VTL with your serial number to see if they can provide you with the book on this amp.

KT77 bias is slightly different from EL34. Although you still need to adjust bias even if you are putting in a new set of EL34s.

Hello everyone, I am a bit nuts I think. just order 10pcs of 6p3s and not the 'e' version. Will it be able to hold the plate/cathode voltage.
