I'd buy some from here.

When I was young and building guitar amps in the mid 60's there was a store near my house that sold "Thoro Test" tubes. All small tubes were $.50 and the big ones were $1. Yes I got some 6L6GC's for $1 each. They were rebranded GE's, probably factory seconds. Of course a dollar bought over 3 gallons of gas then so.....

Summer of 1970 I was working at a Kayo gas station in W.Cola SC and gas was $0.299/gallon till about July. Then a gas war started and by Aug it was down to 0.199/gallon. September it was back up to $0.299/gallon when I left for college.
Unfortunatly I was getting minimum wage at $1.45/hr, but that beat 1968 working in a Mill for $1.25/Hr. |

In 1969 I was working in a TV repair shop. I made $1.05 per hour which was minimum wage. When the minimum wage went up the shop owner refused, so I went to an Olsons Electronics store for 50% of repair charges. Being next door to UM (University of Money), I made lots some weeks, and zero during the summer. Gas was 28 cents / gallon for most of the time. I never saw it go below 25 cents. By then the 50 cent and $1 tube shop was gone.

In the fall of 1964 thru 1965 I was working for $.05 an hour 24/7/365 being all I could be in the glorious tropics of southeast Asia.

Bruce -- Based on the date of that mag, I can only assume that snail mail is moving unusually slow in Loganville these days!!

It sounds pretty nice to be picking up 6BQ7s for $1.00 a pop, but $1.00 in 1962 bought a helluvalot more then than it does now. Tubes have never been cheaper than they are right now. |
