Most of us are tempted to pick a great/powerful/ultimate/complex amp for our first project. Lots of 'bells and whistles', etc. My first guitar amp project had a faceplate full of controls and switches, and I never did get it to work properly.

I describe this common beginner problem by saying "People want to build their last amp first."

If you like to build with tubes it is almost worth learning to play guitar just so you can build an ultra simple amp like a "Champ" as a first project. If the first project is HiFi then is by definition it has twice as many parts and likely costs at least 3x the price of a Champ. But for HiFi the simplest useful amp is likely a single ended 6V6 stereo amp, not unlike a Fender Champ.

For reference here is a schematic.
