I picked up a pair of nice coke bottle shaped Sylvania 6Y6G tubes.
Since their plate voltage is a maximum 200 volts. Would it be possible to put together an SE amplifier using 120 line voltage and a pair of UF4007 diodes for SS rectification? BTW: Cost is a factor in this particular amplifier build. Since the 6Y6G tube requires 1.2 amps for heater current, I would use a 6.3v/4a filament transformer already in my possession. Plus a 2.17A isolation transformer, again, already in my possession. Would it be possible to use a 12au7 tube or a pair of 6au6 tubes as driver tubes? A possible schematic would be really helpful (and greatly appreciated) also! THANKS!! Steve |

I would use an Isolation transformer, not mains (I may have misunderstood your post), and the 6Y6's I have tried do not sound as nice as the 6V6...
Will it work? Sure...will it sound great? Maybe. I was slightly disappointed.

No problem, but YES.....I have a big-n'-heavy 2.17A Stancor isolation transformer.
I figure I'll give the 6Y6G tubes a shot at least. Especially if I can do this without spending too much cash? Steve |

I was very happy with how this sounded.

It is nice for SE in triode mode. In pentode better to use it for PP, to avoid quite significant 2'nd order distortions.

Do you have a set of triode curves for this tube? Data seems a bit hard to come by.

Use it triode connected to drive a 300B.
