Default 6by5 CRC Values

Hi all, I want to use parallel 6by5 rect. tubes in my 16LS kit from S-5 Electronics. The PSU will be a fairly simple CRC filtered type not too far off from the spec'd setup from S-5. The first filter cap in the stock setup is 220uf then comes the 470 ohm 1W resistor and then a 100uf. I know I can play around with the resistor value 'till my heart's content but something tells me that this 220uf first cap is too large. Since the 6by5 was meant for tv damper serivce I cannot find much info on what would be a good (safe) value for the first filter cap. "Anyone...anyone...Bueller"

Hi!

Don't torture tube rectifiers with input caps that large. The 6BY5 is more fragile in this regard as other TV Dampers. You could split the resistor and move one half upfront of the first cap to limit charging current pulses.

Get the power supply design software PSUD. It is free on duncanamps.com It helps you to design your PSU and to simulate the peak current through the rectifier.

Best regards

Thomas

+1. I think the 5V4-G rectifier option is close enough for modeling a 6BY5 in PSUD.

Thanks Zibi, looks like 8uf for 1 tube. I also notice the 100 ohm resistors on the inputs to the tube. Are these necessary because I have seen other designs without them. Just wondering what their purpose is here.

Hi!

The 100 Ohm resistors limit the charging current pulses.
It is not the cap size which is the limit, but those pulses. You can control them either by the size of the cap or by such resistors.
