I haven't used the JJ 12AU7,but I have used the JJ 12AX7 in a Dynaco FM-3 tuner,overall a very well sounding tube.

Absolutely a good pre amplifier can be built with ECC82.
A good pre amplifier is a question of good design more than what type of tube is used.

Tell us first what is your specification for the pre amplifier.
(input level, gain, output impedance required, max. distortion at nominal output level etc.)

I have these tubes .. used it with a chinese clone of grounded Grid for about a year. I preferred the Shugangs over these, then the Mullards despite their darkish sound for the imaging focus. They are a bit bloomy and not ultra low noise I think, but it may sound different in a different circuit. The shugangs are quieter.

I can't hear if they are less linear than a 6DJ8 or other tubes like maybe 6SN7 rated highly for preamps, but I strongly suspected they are not going by the sound signatures I got with various tubes including Telefunkens, BEL, FunkWerks amongst others.

Don't worry. Nobody can hear it.
Distortion meter or spectrum analyzer is required to observe such feature.

Hi,
CD or Tuner input (input resistance 22 ... 47k) specified in Article impedance around 200 ... 600 om - in audio amplifier with the input resistance of P1 = 22 ... 47k.
Valv/Tube in the preamplifier circuit according to your choice?
To give the real sound of Tube (Steam dominant harmonic second-largest harmnik?)
Thank you in advance
