Default WESTREX 60 WATT AMP

Anyone got any info on these amps? They are ex cinema. Rebuilt be my Uncle some years ago. I'm trying to get some info to build/renovate my own.

Do you have any model number on this . I take it your uncle is not here to help . I would vote that it was a cutting head amp more than a theater amp . This does have very good iron in it. It looks like your uncle did a fine job up dating it.

This looks a lot like the Altec amps of the same time period - no surprise. Westrex was the UK arm of Altec / Western Electric.

Could be a British version of the Altec 1568

Pretty amp. I saw the quad of EL34, and hoped it was a stereo unit. Next I spotted the pair of GZ34, and was pleased it had enough rectification to properly handle all the output tubes. Finally I saw the schematic, and noticed the single output transformer that indicates it is a mono design. Pity, as I'm sure it has potential to be a good amp. It'll be difficult to find a matching amp to make a proper pair. Good luck!

I "found" it in my inbox. Morgan did the hard part.

His comments: "I was donated a pair quite a few years ago that came from a PA hire company, so they were in appropriate condition. I scrapped them for the transformers (quite good quality), but the driver’s rubbish. Note especially the fiddle on the HT supply to cure motorboating."
