Default EL844

I thought I'd post a couple pix on this new offering. When I first read about it, I thought they might be using a modified 6P1P but after looking at one I would say it is a complete new design.

I don't have time to test it right now, but it is rather interesting.

One side is completely open (to aid in grid alignment during assembly?)

It is a true pentode with grid, G2 and suppression grid, no beam forming plates.

The plate looks elliptical to me with no barkhausen (sp) suppressor.

Or to improve the possibilities for convection cooling of g2? Which is unlikely as I come to think of it, since this is apparently intended as a lower-powered version of the EL84 for guitar amp lovers who fancy a creamy tone without damaging their ears.

I'd certainly hope not! In a vacuum, there should be no possibility for convective cooling. The primary mechanism of cooling should be radiative, with some amount of conductive cooling occurring through the pins.

As it is essentially 2/3rds of an EL84, maybe the simplest way to make it was to take an EL84 design and remove 1/3rd of the anode?

Are they 33% cheaper too? Usually the tube makers kept making bigger versions because the amp designers smoked them to the limit.

Metals are expensive today, so less metal on plate looks quite economic.

But why did they cut the side off, rather than just making the whole thing shorter?

Shorter means less linear, since less of uniform field in respect to non-uniform fields on edjes. I personally would prefer longer tubes. My dream is to get GU-50 tubes longer 50%, with phallic symbol bulbs. It would be the bestseller.
