Hi guys, I'm looking to purchase 2 matched pairs of NOS/GE 7189A tubes-(not 7189) to reurrect my old Pioneer SM83 amp. I'v tried most of the valve stores on the net with no luck. I'm from South Africa, can anyone help?

already checked out their site. They don't have any matched pairs except for a pair of Toshibas for $179. A bit steep for me. From what I've seen a matched pair of GE's & NOS normally go for around $100-$130. Thanks WildOne.

Try the Russian made 6P14P-EV or ER - pretty close to equivalent, might need to make some adjustment to the bias.. (These are readily available on eBay) I prefer the ER, but it may be getting rare at this point. They're a good deal less expensive than the 7189 or 7189A and I've found usually work well in applications calling for either.

If the amp runs the screen grids at 330 volts or less, use JJ EL84's. I run them in Simple P-P's at 330 volts screen, 440 volts plate, 12+ watts dissipation and extract up to 30 watts from a pair.

Banditt,
The 7189A has pretty much gone the way of the Dodo. AAMOF, NOS 7189s (no "A") are quite scarce. Kevin gave you good advice. The Russian 6П14П-ЕВ (6p14p-ev), AKA EL84M, is a true 7189 equivalent, with decent sonics and a favorable price. Rework the Pioneer amp O/P tube sockets to 7189 spec's and slightly lower the "idle" current.

Seriously considering taking Kevin's advice, besides I don't have much of a choice.
Thanks for the great advice guys, really appreciate it. |
