Hey guys,
Is anyone familiar with the chinese brand Melody? They make mono blocks at 70W per channel, using 845 tubes in push pull, and interstage transformers. I guess the interstage transformers in combination with the push-pull configuration allow the power to be much higher. I wonder how this affects the sound. I heard that Single Ended is sonically preferable than push-pull, but also provide a lot less power (roughly half if I understand correctly). However, I wonder how the use of interstage transformers affects the sound compared to the use of capacitors... Also, i struggle finding reviews for these monoblocks. They are suposed to be Melody's flagship model, but that doesn't tell me anything does it? I think they go for about 32.000RMB here in Shanghai (ca 3200 GBP or 4700USD). I wonder how much better they would sound than the opera consonance Reference 9.9's (by the way, the melody's I can try out, but the opera ref 9.9's I cannot) |

I just now saw this thread...
I'm a dealer for Melody here in the U.S. and the PM845 is a fantastic amplifier. I can't tell you how it compares to the Opera Ref, but the Push-Pull vs. SET thing is really a matter of personal preference. Push Pull amps have less inherent distortion (although there are ways to minimize it with SET) but some people find that even order harmonic distortion to be pleasant. I've heard both types that I thought were great. The PM845 is fairly linear sounding, and not overly warm and gooey. Definitely not rolled off at all in the treble. It's quite dynamic and lively too, with good bass control. It's just very natural and liquid. Pricing here in the US is $7959 for a pair. I would encourage you to take a listen. The specs I have on the M845's say 21wpc. They will definitely have a slightly different tonal characteristic. My personal preference is the PM845, but then I tend to prefer Push-Pull sound in most cases. It depends on your speakers though, as 21w won't be enough for something with relatively low efficiency. |
