What would be the best affordable stepped attenuator to replace the volume pots (continuous type) on an Audible Illusions Modulus IIA and what other mods can I do to it? I will be receiving the preamp any time tomorrow (Friday Feb 11, 2011) and am very excited. I want to hear how it will sound compared to my for mer pre (Counterpoint SA 7.1). Also need to know which value for the pots, 50K or 100K. Thanks in advance.
Is it even worth the time to modify the volume pots?

Why not just listen to the amp 'as-is' for a while, and then decide if it requires improvement and in which areas?

Cheap volume pots can suffer from channel imbalance. I've had it happen with "Blue Alps" (note - could be counterfeit knockoffs), I've replaced it with a stepped attenuator and it did sound better. - better balance between channels and a 'smoother' volume grade.
But as mastodon noted, give it a listen before you modify. |

I agree with the others. Listen to it before you start fiddling with it. Assuming, that is, that it was bought in order to listen to music rather than as a platform for bragging to friends. |

My friend from Israel shipped me some ladder attenuators. I can't think about anything better. He made for 10K, 50K, and 600 Ohm. PM me if you want more info.

ditubo, I also have a Modulus 11a, and am curious as to what you have done to yours. Did you change the volume pots? Anything else?
