Could you guys please make some recommendation on a good quality stepped attenuator for an Air Tight ATC-1 preamp volume control? The potentiometer that comes with the preamp is an Alps 250k.

You can control ladder type attenuator by a single cheap 5K potentiometer, if to control relays by PIC.
