Has anyone built the 40watt triode/ 60 watt Ultralinear amp by Joseph Norwood Still which appeared in the Glass Audio issue Vol10/No2/1998 ?

If you did how did it sound ?
It uses a 6267 pentode at the input and 6SN7 driver and 6550 output tubes. I wonder if you could use an EF86 pentode instead and EL34 tubes at the output with the same component values ?
How much less power would the EL34 give?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,

If you did how did it sound ?

Quite likely like most similar amps.

I wonder if you could use an EF86 pentode instead and EL34 tubes at the output with the same component values ?

The EF86 would work but NOT the EL34 with the same component values.

I was never impressed with the EL34 as compared to the US 6CA7 or 6550...the EL34 most often sounded like a tube on the wrong dosis of steroids...plainly put: rather anemic.

Just my two cents,;)
