I've converted all the *.bmp files to *.gif though.
This gives me much better results ( no pixelation black spots) and the endresult takes up a fraction of the HD/WEB real estate.

So far I haven't run into any problem related to the GIF format.

And of course I kept the original BMP files just in case.

For cleaning up badly scanned images I use PaintShop Pro filters, anything else is usually done in Mickeysoft MS Paint.
