Today I have tried these two items as the amplifier arrived today. I have tried the amplifier "MENG Series X1 6P1" alone via a cd player with eminence alpha 12 a, motorola piezo bullet tweeter. First I tried the amplifier alone and it was fine.

After I connected the Xiang Sheng "728A" preamplifier. The sound quality has improved and also the audio ouput.

This is the only valve preamplifier that I found with bass and treble tone controls. :)

A friend of mine and I have had the discussion and believe that live would be easier if everything was just octal.

in octal, the "round" numbers... 10, 100, 1000 are all infinitely evenly divisible by 2.

So, half of 1000 is 400, then 200, 100, 40, 20 10, 4, 2, 1

Instead of this whole... 1000, 500, 250, 125, 62.5, 31.25, 15.625, 7.8125, 3.90625, 1.953125, 0.9765625 crap... and it only gets messier the higher up you start.

A system of measurement like the metric system, but based on octal would benefit even more. You essentially get the benefits of the fractional "imperial" method and the incremental metric system.

Need half a meter? 40 centimeters. How about a quarter? well that's 20 centimeters. how about 1 and 3/8ths centimeters? why, that's 13 millimeters. 1 7/16ths? that's 13.4 millimeters (.4 being one-half of 1). All of this very easy to calculate in your head.

That may be handy if calculations are limited to divide-by-2 or if the measurements start out as "nice" numbers. But for anything else, it becomes a royal pain to deal with. Just try using the imperial system. Say, find the half of 10'3-35/64" using a calculator. Good luck. How many inches per foot again?! Now, try finding half of 3.138 meters using a calculator. Easy. You can even measure that distance with a regular tape measure without having to do any weird translations. Metric system. What a concept.

Sacpul,

Any news on your 728A? I am thinking of bying this. Did you do any mods? Did you compare with other preamp?

I am hesitating between the 728A, the 708B and the little dot MK3.

I am looking for a preamp (effect box), no need phono, no need tone control. Headphone output is a plus but not a must. I am keen on tube rolling and simple mods.

Thanks,
Serge
