What tubes for a tube amp?

I'm sure there are threads out there discussing this but I wouldn't know what to search for?

If I wanted to build a tube amp without output transformer, what tubes would be a good choice?
Lets aim for 20w or something along those lines?

I like the thought of a single ended amp so I guess that would be on my wishlist as well. But I don't know enough about designing amplifiers to really kno what I'm talking about.

I just want a place to start my reading.
So, a recomendation on suitable tubes and perhaps a topology. That'll keep me busy for a while. ;)

Twenty watt OTL? Why set your goals so low?

Suggest getting Morgan Jones' book on tube/valve amplifiers. It has become the modern design bible.

That's pretty funny! The OTL section in MJ's book is about 2/3 of a page! :D

And why is that, exactly?

I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or not, but basically from what I remember of reading it MJ is no fan of OTL's and also does not claim to be an expert in their design.

tubes able to deliver a LOT of current, preferably at relatively low operating voltage. Big horizontal sweep tubes come to mind...

Ok, at least now I know it's called OTL. ;)

Buy a kit from Tubelab (George). He posts here pretty often and even has his own forum.

Sorry, none intended. I see very little conversation about OTL. Always assumed there must be something inherently difficult/expensive/evil about it.
