Default 300b socket

Sorry for the dumb question: the 300B can be inserted in any direction in the socket ? I have two sockets that do not seem to have any indication of pin number. Does it mean I can use them in any direction, and just be careful how I put the tube in ?

Thank you for help.

Best Regards,

Davide

You will notice that you cannot put them in "any" direction, so don't worry.

Look carefully at the sockets and you should notice 2 of the holes being larger than the other two, there are two corresponding larger pins on the tube, these are the filament holes / pins so you SHOULD not be able to insert the tubes incorrectly.

I say should not because there are low quality sockets around with holes that an "overzealous" person would be able to insert the tubes in an incorrect way.

I have run into a few of those low quality sockets myself, (relatively inexpensive Chinese made ceramic sockets) it takes a fair amount of force to do it, but I have seen the consequences first hand. Note that this is also possible with some expensive teflon types as well.

Yes, the cheap Chinese ones. I remember trying to bend the solder tab of one slightly to get a better angle and the tab simply broke in two, the solder tab in my fingers and the other part still riveted to the socket.

The thing that gets me though is I have seen a couple amps with these really cheap low quality sockets and high dollar boutique parts, you would think one would get the basics down first and then "flitter" the money away.

Oh well.

I think I got it, my problem was that I have the socket, and I wanted to put them on a board, but I don't have the tubes yet.

Statistically I got it 50% correctly, guess I will have to cry a bit to desolder the wrongly mounted socket from the board :-(

Thanks,

Davide
