Nice line stage. If i had to listen to it, i'd probably use a single half per channel and plate chokes, but it probably sounds ok as is. Some people don't like the 5687 particularly as it doesn't sound quite 'tubey', if anything it reminds me of a very high quality opamp, one i can comfortably live with. Hopefully next century's opamps will be as good

Hi,

Have you applied to that Cryo treatment program? Or on HGH pills perhaps? Not that I don't hope we all make it to 2100.

What is the input impedance of the amp you're using with this? The Zo of the preamp is very high. Also, have you had any longevity problems with placing a 100uF cap after the poor little 6X4?

Interesting point. I saw your message and thought "yup, too much". But then I started to think some more: The rectifier manufacturer gives a max cap value, but this must be for maximum current, and it probably assumes a small series resistance. (Windings). In a real circuit - especially a preamp, the current will be much less than max. This means that the rectifier doesn't have to work so hard to top-up that resovour cap. Also, this could be a case of "the smaller the mains transformer the better". Any secondary winding resistance is effectively in series with the cap. So, maybe there are cases when you can stretch the rules a bit. Cheers, |

The power supply i saw is choke input so the value of the cap is not critical at all. Are we talking of the same circuit? The databooks always give max value for cap input.
Output impedance too high? 1.6k is not that bad. cheers peter |
