The 6V6's are $35.80, not $40, so there's one Edcor. Also, Triad chokes are cheaper than Hammonds Triad Magnetics - C-14X - Allied Electronics

I've seen chokes for switch mode power supplies with ratings like 7H @2A and the transformers are only a couple of inches on the side. These are gap-core inductors.

Would they work as well? It seems something must be given up to achieve the small size compared to traditional chokes.

The multiplier is half wave. ...

For clarification, it is actually two half wave multipliers. Ripple is as low as Greinacher Doubler. If you put any faith in Wikipedia they call it "The Delon circuit"

From WIKI:
"The Delon circuit uses a bridge topology for voltage doubling....
The circuit consists of two half-wave peak detectors, functioning in exactly the same way as the peak detector cell in the Greinacher circuit .... Each of the two peak detector cells operates on opposite half-cycles of the incoming waveform. Since their outputs are in series, the output is twice the peak input voltage."

As long as it does a good job safely, that is what is important.
