Default If we're talking DIY

...why use new production in the first place ? Quality does not seem too good at present . I have seen , and tested quite a few recent Sovtek , Ei and Chinese valves . The Sovteks were 6L6's for a guitar amp . Out of 8 I could only make one matched pair , the test result spread was about 15% so these actually aren't that bad . Chinese valves were NOS 6SN7 from the 1970's , appallingly awful , 30% were 'faulty' on the tester for leakage , 50% had poor sectional balance (>20% difference) , leaving 20 almost good ones out of a hundred . Ei were silver plate ECC83 . I could make the gm reading change just by tapping the glass gently . The crimps on the anodes looked suspiciously loose . Back to the supplier they went . I can only recommend if using 6L6 family valves to seek NOS 6BG6G . 6BG6G are just a 6L6 with a topcap . Otherwise 807 , 5B/255M can be substituted for 6L6 with a socket change . 6BG6 , 807 , 5B/255M are all very cheap and available

The blue/purple glow like that is fine, that is caused by stray electrons, that miss the plate, hitting the glass. This happens with my triode operated 6197's, looks pretty cool. The bad blue glow is when the whole tube glows blue, that means it has gas in it.

Hi,

Sure these were made by EI, sounds more like those French Post Office tubes to me...

I think ot is a chromium plating of the anodes, not really my kind of thing...the sound awkward.

Cheers,
