Why are mesh plates supposed to be superior?

Hi all

I often see reports that mesh anodes sound better than (the same tube type with) solid plates. Is there a scientifically plausible explanation for that, or is there a hidden variable involved?

Can anyone shed some light on this? (pun intended :smash: )

Better or different? ;)
Some thoughts:
- real 'mesh' is a non resonant construction;
- because of lesser surface (mesh in comparison to solid material) plate capacitance might be smaller.
