Nick,

It is possible to use neutralising capacitors with SE configuration - this is an RF technique so I'm not sure how succesful it will be at audio with SE configurstion.

A good explaination of the theory can be found in EIMAC 'Care and Feeding of Triodes' Neutralising Theory .

I found I need to go up in value from a value equal to the input capacitance but I start at about half the Cin and work up from there just in case.

A scope is some use but not all, ears are easily deceived so unless you have been taught how to do objective listening be wary (and if you have been taught then you know how much you have to be wary!), a spectrum analyser is the best tool for setting the value objectively...

hope this helps and good luck with your experimenting...

ciao

James
