In the analysis of the blocking distortion that the PowerDrive circuit is designed to remedy, I don't understand why when the coupling capacitor discharges on large positive swings it discharges through the plate only, but when recharging after the transient has passed it recharges through both the plate resistor and the grid resistor. Help!

Your a little off on this. When the grid is pulled positive with respect to the cathode , it will pull current from the coupling cap fairly quickly. Then when the grid is swung negative again it quits pulling current and the cap has to slowly recharge through the plate and grid resistors. The recharge is considerably longer than the discharge.
