I have an S-5 electrons K-16LS with the tone control board and its been working great as the amp for my computer speakers for some time, but yesterday one of my monitors fell on it. There seems to be no obvious damage (no broken tubes, caps anything else) but now there is static noise coming from the left channel.
the noise is independent of volume control, and stays at constant volume. I've been reading a lot of tube amp theory books, but I'm still pretty new to tubes. Is this what happens when a tube becomes gassy, and there is a small crack I'm not seeing? If so, are there some simple ways to test which tube is bad (pulling and swapping around?) or could there be another explanation and some other tests i can do to track down the problem. Thanks for the input Josh Hill |

Check your circuit traces, it could be that you have cracked one and have poor or intermittent contact. I would also check your solder joins, could be one has popped off the board.

I checked the traces and solder joints and found no problems. Then I started pulling out pairs of the power tubes and the noise was still there. Found out it was one of the 5670's by swapping it with the other channel.
