Looking for beter EL34/6CA7 tubes for C-J MV55 amp
I currently have Electro-Harmonix and Chinese Shunguang EL34 tubes for my Conrad-Johnson stereo power amp, and frankly, it seems like a toss-up between both.
I've been told that there are a lot better EL34/6CA7 tubes out there than the ones I have. Unfortunately, I don't really have the opportunity to audition what's out there.
In particular, I've been told by some that NOS General Electric 6CA7 tubes are about the best sounding (for this amp). I wonder whether anyone has had any experience with NOS GE 6CA7's and also with newer production Groove Tubes, which, some say, sound about as good as the NOS GE's made some 25 years ago.
And I'm also wondering about other tubes: the Bristish NOS Mullards, of course (xf1,2, 3 or 4??) the Dutch Amperex (Bugles Boys, and, especially interesting, for the money, the relatively lower-cost Holland-made Amperex Orange Globe) Also, What about the Telefunkens, Siemens, Valvos.....? Are they all audibly better than EH or Shunguang EL34's?
Any input would be most welcome. I'm aware the NOS tubes have to be in good condition.
And lastly, what about the Russian Winged "C" EL34's, which are relatively inexpensive, and praised by some audiophiles?
