For those of you that have built one of these, do you find that you need a line amp on the back end? I'm thinking of building one using salas's shunt regulator in the power supply, but I'm not sure if I'll get enough gain out of it.

What cartridge are you using?Output of the phoho stage is around 40 db.You aslo have to consider driving ability.IMHO you need more than 50 k input impendance for the next stage.

I'm not sure about the cartridge but I can find out. This is for a friend. He'd be running it into a Yamaha RXV750 stereo receiver and probably also into a presonus fire studio to make digital backups of his records.

Using this into the receiver it is unlikely he would need any additional gain, however double check the input impedance of all the available line level inputs. (They'll probably all be the same and are hopefully 47K or higher.)
Again with the Presonus the output levels are likely to be high enough however check the input impedance of this device as well.
