Umm, not that uncommon to use some high voltage gas thyratrons as rectifiers, and in that case the grid is used as the plate and the plate cap is left unconnected. A pair is usually used with FWCT... Not sure if this is what they are doing or not. FWIW this works quite well at a couple of hundred mA and a KV or two... Hope I am not giving anything away.. :devilr:
