it looks like it had a canvas base cover once apon a time, and would have been military (but other than that it's gone A.W.L.)

Ok, thanks for the help. I've found this info:
The valve in the photo has blackened fins spot-welded to a shiny anode. This shows that it is of post-1938 manufacture and has been uprated from 250 V and 12 Watt dissipation to 300 V and 15 Watt dissipation. The tube is here: http://www3.osk.3web.ne.jp/~euvalve/gallery/px4.html |
