Default componet upgrade

Hello to all.Geting ready to fix dads sansui 1000a tube reciever.Going to upgrade where ever I can. Its been a while since I've worked on this vintage stuf.Resistors, can you replace silver or gold band with 1%. can you replace carbon with metal film or wirewound.Whats the rule of thumb for the size?can you replace a 1 watt with a 3. A 3 with a 5. Capacitors, when upgrading to anything NOT electrolytic, poly for exsample.and you cannot find the exact value (uf) do you go up or down in value while keeping the voltage the same? Any tips on diodes? Thanks in advance, tom

Resistors; Yes 1% is fine. Just mind the voltage rating in higher voltage parts of the circuit. IIRC the usual 1/2W resistors are rated at 200-250V. (it's a physical size/arcing thing)

You can use carbon comp, metal film, carbon film, etc. In some circuits the inductance of wirewounds might cause issues, but that's usually not a problem.

Yep,you can 'uprate' resistors, and it might even be a good idea to do so,just so they run cooler.

Caps,With electrolytics, you can usually safely go up in value a bit.The old electros had pretty wide tolerance ranges +/- 25% isn't unheard of. With small signal caps,it might be best to use the next closest value,if you can't find the exact value-Some of these caps might be in the tone control circuitry, and could throw off the sound if they are too far off from the original values.

Just some quick ramblings from a sleep-deprived person.
