That would be ingenious.

Use of an old C-64 power supply found in thrift stores would be beneficial. Once the DC side is bypassed, you have 12V, 3A "wallwart". Plenty of juice to drive the heaters and the step-up transformer.

Cheers!

i believe that scheme is used by makers of stompboxes (EH for instance) to avoid having 120/230VAC leading directly into the box

That shape case would be easy to sculpt out of laminated MDF. Start by hogging out the interior space while the 3/4" sheets are separate. Plunge router, 4-holes and jigsaw, etc. Then stack them with glue and a couple of alignment dowels. Last step is to machine the outside. A floorstanding belt sander and spindle sander will be all you'll need. 40 to 60 grit for roughing to shape then hand sand with progressively finer papers. Seal, paint.

Good idea. I'll take a look at what the wood tools are capable of at school.

Beat me to it.. This method is the second easiest out there next to using a CNC machine and a solid block of aluminum to make a unibody front/top/bottom/sides and a rear plate for that.

But that's:

1.) Expensive
2.) Not quite as rewarding when you look at it finished on your mantle.
