Default What does your Aikido drive?

Just interested in what you are using your Aikido for apart from a headphone amp.

Being a total newbie to this hobby I made the mistake of thinking that my Aikido could be used as a preamp for my SS power amp Just a bit too much gain apparently

Now with a bit more knowledge after swatting up on more tutorials I think I will modify it for headphone use and start on a buffer amp for my power amp. Simple Cathode Follower maybe.

Also starting to gather parts for a simple SE maybe with EL34 or EL84's and 6N6P's as the driver.

So what do you use your Aikido for?

You just need to use lower mu tubes... 12B4, trioded pentodes, etc.

I've used an Aikido on the bench as a line driver, as well as similar circuits for driving trioded sweep tubes in tests. With the right choice of tubes, it can swing a good amount of volts. I'm rather fond of the 5751 when I need gain and the load doesn't drop below 47K.

Cheers!

Thks Gregg. These have a really low mu I see, 6~. I just bought some 6N6P's for the lower mu but they are not comparable.

I'll see if I can find some on ebay.

In the meantime I'm going to try the Aikido as a headphone amp.

I use mine as a front end of a SE KT-88 amp. I like it.

I use it as front end in my hybrid amp, followed by a power diamond buffer.
Steve Dunlap's Krill amp is another option..

Ciao

Aikido is a topology you can use it to drive many things. I use it as a line amp to push 2A3 drive 300B se amp.

You can put 10K ohms high quality R in series to input pin of 10K orms volume pot -that will reduce gain significantly, may prove to be OK for your SS amp.

I built 2nd half of the Aikido as buffer and it gave very good result better than anything I built earlier. You can try that.

Regards

I might just try that. In fact I have an Alps 10K in the post right now. Should arrive in a week or 2.

I'm still looking for input tubes with a low mu. OlleBolle just reminded me the 12B4 is not a twin triode.

I'm planning to build a buffer using a cathode follower which is what the second half of the Aikido is

6080 is a rather low mu twin, probably too low to use in both sections. However as a CF section gain is ~.6 and it can drive very demanding loads.

Another almost heretical thing you can do to reduce gain is apply NFB.

Would these be feasible with JB's board 5687 configuration?
