Why do you need a phono peramp?

Two reasons:

1. The output from the cartridge is much lower than the other common sources, so depending on the cartridge it needs to be amplified by 100 to 1000 times, .

2. When a record is cut, the high frequencies are boosted to increase the S/N ratio for record surface noise. The low frequencies are cut, so that the groove is not too wide and to make it easier for the cartridge to track. This is referred to as the RIAA equalization curve. The phono pre-amp must reverse the equalization to get back to flat response.
