If you check Quicksilvers web site I believe that mention was made of changes in the second version of the 8417 amplifier. The first gen used Phillips/ECG tubes, the second version was supposed to have been modified to use the GE 8417 tubes. Since I own both gens of this model I thought it interesting to look for these changes. I found none, as both are the same with respect to parts used and the values.
Can anyone else shed some light here? Frank? Joe |

Hi,
Not really sure if QS actually incorporated any changes themselves but the GEs were impossible to bias unless you lower the gridleak to 100K or lower, say 47K. The rest of the mods is described at Uncle Neds' site: 8417 mods. I've been digging through the QS website but so far haven't found anything they did to allow for 8417s that were not Sylvania ECG/Philips. Cheers,

Actually there are three version of the quicksilver 8417.
The original philips 8417 had 12dw7 input tubes, these tubs became unavailable. Second quicksilver philips 8417 had 12ax7 and 12au7 or12bh7 tube on the imput third was the rca quicksilver 8417 with the same imput as the second philips |

By god your right! I forgot about the 1st version that used the 12dw7 tube. That makes mine versions 2, and 3. Now I have to buy up a set of the first version jobbies. Joe |
