I'll make a guess that the distortion generating mechanism makes lots of annoying high harmonics that they needed to get rid of with a low pass filter.

Maybe they used a spoke, I mean, a spike shaver circuit (intentionally limited slew rate) to get rid of glitches too.

When tubes are used properly you can get plenty of treble, bass, and
distortion all at the same time ;-) No pedal needed...
