Has anyone ever built a tape NR unit with vacuum tubes? It seems like one could implement something akin to DBX or Dolby using remote cutoff tubes. The thought occurred to me whilst musing on NAB tape head preamps. I was thinking about how much fun it would be to replace the electronics in a cassette machine with a tube preamp but then I realized that NR would be nearly mandatory for that format.
Of course such a thing wouldn't be totally useless for reel to reel either.
