What is a trigger tube used for?

I think you may find that it is intended to produce the pulse required to trigger a thyratron to switch on in AC control circuits such as stage lighting dimmers etc. The semiconductor equivalent of a thyratron is a thyristor. Thyristors only work on DC, so the AC version is a triac, and the trigger device is a diac.

Another possibility is that it is an early digital computer device, such as a dekatron, which was a triggered counter.
