Default suggestion about AIKIDO PRE

Hi guys,

i'd want to build an AIKIDO line-stage in front of the NP's F3...

If I understand correctly, the Zen requires a huge gain to be drived properly. Then, I wonder what the most reccomended tubes are as a primary an as CF inside the pre-amp.

Then, I would be pleased to receive some advice over the "work point" to choose, and how to calculate the resistors, I'm not so skilled with tubes right now.
and ... finally, if i wan't to use the tubes at hypotetical 150V... the B+ should be 300v ?

Hope you guys can understand my points, sorry but English is not my first language. Thanks in advance for your help!

Look at page 6 in the octal manual from John Broskie's website
The Mu is the amplification rating of each tube choice.

The Aikido manual (link for octal version in Renron's post above) has tons of info on voltages, gain etc; it is very informative.

Overall gain for the Aikido is roughly 1/2 of the mu for the input tube, so 100/2=50 for a 12AX7 or 30/2=15 for a 6922/6DJ8. The tables at the end of the document give resistor values, and B+ voltages for each tube choice. The notes at the end of the table are also very helpful. All of the B+, resistor values, etc are already worked out in the tables (for the tubes listed in the tables) so you don't need to do any calcs, other than some basic power supply calcs to feed the tubes the correct B+.

You can download the 9-pin manual at the bottom of this page:

for the purpose of calculation about the B+ voltage, which are parameters i have to use ?

For example:
If I want to supply 2x6dj8 (one for the input and one for the CF) with 150V i have to calculate the PSU for the current draw of (looking at the table) 10mA * 2 = 20mA. it's ok ?

For this purpose i'm intended to use PSUD2 with custant current of 20mA (each channel). Does it right ?

hello gionag,

Based on the nature of your questions I quess you are a "novice tube designer". I suggest that you start with a kit, or proven design; not your own design. Basic tube design is quite simple, but requires knowledge and experience.

Perhaps you should buy an Aikido kit from Broskie and build it. The manual referred to earlier tells you what power supply to build etc. The Aikido PC board is high quality and John has done all the designing.

After you are happily using your working Aikido, you can read-up, dream and begin to design your own stuff.

If you really want to design your own version of Aikido I recommend that you first read-up on tube design. There are several good book and websites. A good collection is here

Best wishes

Sorry - this one slipped away too soon.

Pete Millett has an amazing collection of book and guys on his website - http://www.pmillett.com/technical_books_online.htm

Another tube design website is here: http://www.radau5.ch/basics_1.html
