Genalex repro KT88s
I noticed that Guitar Center is selling these and has them matched by "Soft", "Medium", or "Hard". Does this have any meaning for the hi-fi market? Seems we would want the least distorting tube...

Don't know what these guys do in guitar amp cult, but those reissues are very compact in production control so to exhibit so big differences in clip region, to ear test and collect in groups is rather copious to say the least. Maybe their traditional standard policy was to group tubes in such a way and they offer it on all types no matter what. In between different makes of same type there are different max clip signatures, but in between same make same type, very difficult to group seriously. Especially when generally made good in factory.

I think the nomenclature they refer to may have something to do with the bias point of the tube. Tubes with a lower bias point will have less headroom and thus clip earlier and the opposite for a higher bias point.
The tube depot has a link which explains the bias point.
I hope this helps
