My just bought second hand EL84 SE amp with no input and with volume control at minimum makes a crackling sound over the speakers. Changing the tubes didn't help. It is an intermittent problem but still plays music over the noise. It uses an ECC83 and 2 X EL84 pentode mode per channel I don't particularly like the sound of the ECC83 which is configured as SRPP and would like to upgrade this section. I have about 280 volts from the power supply. Tubes I have at hand are ECC81, ECC88, 2C51, 12B4 and 6SN7. This amp is made by Audio Note with large excellent output transformers. Any suggestions to take this up to the next level.

Hi diegot,
I have been looking at that design but can I just parallel up a pair of EL84's withouy any changes to the circuit. I also notice that most pentode users like to regulate the screen supply. Also what change in sound can I expect. Still have that noise which may be a PSU problem. I need the EL84 Gurus advice Regards, Charles |
