I,m a noob at tubes, so I'm looking for suggestions on a
low cost unit with the following attributes. 1. Small and inexpensive..self explanitory.(small rack mount) 2.Input will be PC sound card. (do not even have a CD or DVD player .)all MP3/flac- AVI/DIVX for video.(50,000) 3.Output is to high powered Quasi MOSFET amps. (30k impedance). 4.Hybrid is preferred because I'm going to make it's volume remote controlled. 5. Simple, because all post processing is done by the PC/sound card. (just a on/off switch, volume, and IR receiver.no tone controls.) 6. Safe, for my 1200$ PC and DIY amps.(don't want HV B+ to 7.I might want it to be my headphone amp as well. The reason I want to go this route is because of the "classic" tube sound I hear about and the outright novelty of this approach. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance,OS. |

Let me get this straight;
you want it to be hybrid, you but also want it to be simple? those sound like rather conflicting requirements. John Broskie will sell you a very high-quality Aikido PCB (or even a whole kit) that's just fine for building yourself a preamp of this nature. The volume control, however, will be up to you. I myself can vouch for the the quality of the Aikido kit, but it's really more of a starting point than anything else. --k |

I have an answer in my avatar. However, not every hybrid amp does such things, but mostly people use tube pre with traditional SS output stage combining worses of 2 worlds.
Take an Aikido board as suggested, and add one FET source follower loaded on a CCS. You will be surprised how good is sound, though power consumption will be huge.
