12au7 who has the best ultra low noise ???
iam also look for with the same amount of brightness that a lot of the vintage have . i notice that one s made today have a deeper tone to them look for low hum and microphone feedback if thier out thier for preamp

I am very happy with the modern JJ's. In some applications, i would not bother to spend a lot in preamp tubes...

The quietest 12AU7 tubes I have tried are Mullard M8136. Amperex 7316, Siemend Halske silver plate etc. have all had more 50Hz hum than the M8136 in my grounded grid preamp.

Not too expensive either: £15-20 each on ebay.

Smooth plate Telefunkens were known the be very low noise. They were used by several test equipment makers in critical high sensitivity areas. Boonton used them in their millivoltmeters and Tektronix also used them in low signal level gain stages. Many that are offered on feebay were stripped from these old instruments.
